SYNOPSIS:

It has only been a few months since humanity found out about the various shifters that live among them. This brave new world is not without its challenges; neither for the humans or the shifters. Alpha Squad is formed to help law enforcement agencies deal with shifter related matters, and not a moment too soon! Follow the brave men and women of the squad as they try to come to terms with their new reality, catch criminals and find love along the way.

Boot Camp

Bear shifter Eric King is asked to join Alpha Squad; a task force meant to promote cooperation between shifters and humans in law enforcement, but there are problems: Is Alpha Squad even a serious initiative? And how will he focus on his training when his inner bear insists that the squad leader is his mate?

"I'll be back shortly," she mumbled as she fumbled with the tent's opening and staggered out.

The sky was clear, which was unusual for this part of the world. Countless stars lit up the tent site and surrounding rocks and shrubbery. Janine would have to walk downhill a bit for cover.

She took a deep breath and wrapped her warm jacket around herself. It was only late September, but the nights were already chilly in these hills. With the help of the star and moon light, Janine found the most gradual path down into some larger shrubs about thirty or so feet away from the summit.

She did not waste time, and soon after started her climb back up. That was when it all went wrong. A loose rock escaped from underneath her foot and sent her sliding down the side of the hill. She let out a low whimper as her hip hit a sharp protrusion on the way, all the while flailing and reaching out for whatever vegetation she could find to stop her fall.

This seemed to go on forever, until finally, she stopped slipping. But it wasn't a small tree or shrub that had broken her momentum, it was a firm hand around her wrist.

Janine looked up and found a pair of familiar eyes staring down at her. Eric King.

How in the world had he come to her rescue so quickly? There had been no activity around the camp as far as Janine saw. Perhaps he had been out and about as well.

"Gotcha," he said. "Terrain's treacherous around these hills." He glanced up at the summit, which was a good hundred feet away now.

God, that voice. Janine did not say a word as he lifted her back onto her feet; she could not find the words. Of course, it was not just his voice, it was his whole being that had affected her so. After trying so hard to do the best job she could, no matter what the assignment, at this moment, she wanted nothing more than to throw it all away.

You're mine. The same low growl entered her mind. This was totally the wrong time for her overactive imagination to kick in.

Am I? Am I yours? she thought.

I knew that you were from the moment I first saw you.

Janine was frozen in place, communicating with whatever that voice was—a figment of her own imagination perhaps—when Eric's eyes began to glow in the dark. In this light, it should not have been possible to make out their color, but they had very clearly turned warm amber.

"How are you doing this?" she stammered.

"Wait, you can actually hear me?" he asked, looking about as shocked as she felt.

Janine opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again and frowned.

I don't understand. I have my orders. I have a job to do. Why are you in my head?

A smile broke through Eric's formerly serious expression. Because I am meant to be in your head. For whatever reason, we are meant to be in each other's lives.

Janine shook her head. That does not make any sense. And anyway, I never knew shifters could read minds.

We can't. Only when we find our true mate can we hear their thoughts, and they can hear ours.

That was too much. Janine freed her wrist from Eric's grasp and started to walk away, still shaking her head. She could not accept this.

"Thanks for saving me," she mumbled as she fought the pain resulting from her fall and marched back toward camp. "I need some time to think."

Friends & Foes

Alpha Squad has received its very first assignment and bear shifter Adam King is excited to jump head-first into the action. Upon investigating a string of seemingly shifter related murders, he finds himself torn between his job and the local police’s main suspect; Felicity Weir; female bear shifter and Adam’s fated mate…

Felicity wasn't sure what woke her up. It wasn't a noise, but a sensation or a presence. She blinked a few times and stared at the ceiling.
There it was again.
A tug in her chest which told her she wasn't alone.
It wasn't a bad feeling; it was reassuring and warm, like a cozy blanket to keep the cold out. A smile formed on her lips. It was Adam.
Felicity got up and made her way through the living room straight to the front door.
There he was.
"Hi," she said, and opened the door wide.
"I didn't disturb you, did I?" he asked.
She shook her head. "You came just at the right time."
Felicity stepped aside and watched him enter. There was something different about him now. He was a mess of feelings and thoughts, making it hard for Felicity to focus on any one of them.
"What's going on?" she asked. How did you know where I live? Of course, she didn't mind him turning up here, but that didn't make her less curious.
Adam turned and fiddled with his vest, retrieving a familiar looking notepad and holding it up in her direction.
"I got this off the detective," Adam said in a matter-of-fact tone.
Felicity took the notepad and studied it carefully. A rare glimpse into the inner workings of the mind of her main enemy on the police force. "You stole this?" she said. She wasn't even sure she wanted to know the exact circumstances under which he obtained it.
Adam shrugged. "Borrowed it. I was hoping to get insight into the police investigation. They're not exactly telling us anything."
Felicity frowned. "No? I thought Alpha Squad was collaborating with the police."
"Yeah, we thought so too. It's a rather one-sided affair."
If that was the case, then why was he here sharing the detective's notes with her and not with his team mates…?
There's something you're not telling me.
Adam pressed his lips together. I'm sorry.
Felicity stepped up to him and rested her hand on his arm. What is it?
"I'm off the team. At least for now. The major wants to avoid any appearance of impropriety."
Felicity sank down onto the sofa, her hands tightening around the notepad. Now what?
Adam sat down next to her and took her hand. A jolt of electricity passed from his skin into hers; at least that was the nearest description to how it felt.
I'm so sorry. But no matter what, we'll figure things out together.
Felicity closed her eyes and tried to think. But all that achieved was to flood her mind with imagery of their kiss in the woods. How did shifter couples achieve anything at all, when the intense attraction between them overwhelmed everything else, even rational thought?
"It'll be okay, right?" Felicity mumbled.
"I know it will." Adam wrapped his arm around her and held her close.
She could hear his heartbeat so clearly. How it had sped up the moment they touched and continued to hammer away at a feverish pace now that she was safely tucked in his embrace. Perhaps this was the right thing to do. Perhaps they owed it to themselves as well as each other to blow off some steam, so that they could dive into the investigation with renewed vigor and focus.
That was her justification to satisfy her mind anyway. Her heart and body didn't care to rationalize; they just wanted to act.
Adam sensed the change in her; of course he did. Such was their connection.
He scooped her up off the couch and carried her through the short hallway into the bedroom. It was a mess; the bed wasn't made and laundry was piled up on the chair that stood by the wardrobe. Felicity might have felt awkward about the state of the room with anyone else, but not with Adam. He hadn't even noticed it.
His eyes were fixed on hers.

Infiltrator

For the past six months, Thomas Blackwood has been serving two masters: he’s been an active part of Alpha Squad, but only on his old alpha’s say-so. When he finds himself stuck in between two sets of clashing orders, he must make a choice: who does he truly serve? And what would the woman of his dreams, Private Callahan, think of him if she knew he was a traitor?

Private Callahan.

The petite and quiet assistant to Major Williams was a constant influence on his mood. He couldn't explain quite how it worked, but every time Thomas caught a glimpse of her, his heart sang. If she inadvertently looked in his direction, his nerves surged.

If by chance she failed to cross paths with him on any given day, his day was essentially ruined.
He'd admired her from afar ever since his arrival on base all those months ago. It was a bit creepy, how fixated he was on her. Like a stalker, he watched out for her, and often caught himself when his eyes lingered on her just a bit too long for comfort.

At least nobody had suspected anything, except maybe the object of his desire herself.

Private Callahan had barely spoken a word to him in six months. She made sure never to come too near or be alone with him. Whenever he was around, she seemed to act as though he was infected with a dangerous disease. She wasn't all wrong, of course. Even though she was only human, her instincts had picked up on his obsession and as a result, she was always on defense with him.

He wasn't sure whether to be impressed by her keen intuition or feel slighted.

Still, no matter how frustrated he sometimes became by her standoffish behavior, he could not hold it against her for long. She remained ever-perfect; a brunette goddess without a single flaw. In his mind, she could do no wrong; it was him who was at fault. He’d brought all of this on himself by acting like a complete tool around her.

"Blackwood, report to Major Williams' office," a stern voice interrupted his thoughts. He looked up to find Eric King, the major's second-in-command, staring at him with his arms folded.

"I'll be right there," Thomas mumbled, while avoiding eye contact with the bear shifter, as was wolf custom when addressed by one's superiors.

For but a split second, he wondered what the major wanted to see him about. The second and much more pressing thing on his mind was whether Private Callahan would be in Major Williams' office.
He hoped so.

Showdown

Upon joining Alpha Squad, bear shifter hybrid Sean McMillan realizes there’s a lot more to being a shifter than occasionally sprouting some fur. His first mission: a double murder. That shouldn’t be too hard for the experienced former police detective, but he didn’t count on coming across lab assistant Erin Reid who shows an unusual amount of interest in him. Strangely, the feeling is mutual…

Excerpt

Joining Alpha Squad was never meant to be easy.
Sean McMillan rested both hands on the wash basin, with his eyes fixed straight ahead at the mirror. He wasn't looking at himself as such, just staring through his reflection at nothing.
Bentley—the gruff former SAS man responsible for his training—had warned him before he'd started boot camp; the others on the squad had joked and teased him about the same.
But the intense training he’d undergone hadn't bothered him. He’d welcomed the physical and mental challenges. And anyway, training was over now. He'd survived.
What ate at him this morning—most mornings, actually—went much deeper.
Had he made the right choice?
His career on the Kent police force had been on an upward trajectory. At just under thirty, he'd made detective. He'd enjoyed the work and was good at it.
And ever since the string of murders near the Sevenoaks shifter refugee camp had been solved, things had gone a little nuts. He'd been singled out as somewhat of a hero and been given his pick of cases and assignments.
And yet, he'd left everything behind to join Alpha Squad.
Justifications for this decision were easy to sum up; the chance to do something different; to make a difference on a national scale; to be a part of a new agency which enjoyed the support of an entire government ministry. Still, none of that rang true; Sean could not explain to himself why he was really here.
He did not belong.
This wasn't a new feeling, of course. He'd always carried with him a sense that he was different somehow even when he was young. When he hit puberty, his dad had taken him aside and explained a few things about what it meant to be a shifter. About the importance of getting his urges under control. To keep his nature a secret at all costs.
He was already taller and stronger than most boys his age, so nobody really messed with him. But he didn't have a lot of friends in secondary school either. Not that that bothered him.
Sean had always been quite content in his own company. He preferred listening to talking, something that would serve him well in his professional life so far.
What he found hard to accept was that there was this whole other side to him which he was just meant to ignore. He'd gotten over it though. And now he was facing the other side of that dilemma.
Here he was, part of a brave new world where shifters no longer needed to hide. That dirty little secret he'd carried with him all his life was no longer a secret. The team consisted of more shifters than humans, and they didn't shy away from showing off their peculiar transformational talents should the situation demand it. Even if it didn't. It was like it was all a big game to them.
That was the biggest shock he'd faced upon arriving on base. It wasn't uncommon for one or more of the team to spontaneously morph into their animal selves to go out for a run around the woods. No matter how often they'd encouraged him to join in, Sean had been unable to bring himself to. It simply felt wrong to let his animal side out.
He forced himself to snap out of his pointless thoughts by splashing cold water on his face. Onwards and upwards. He'd chosen to be a part of the squad, so he wouldn't allow himself to give up so easily. Perhaps once he went on his first mission, all these doubts would fade.
